Editor’s Review
XAMPP is a program that’s free and open source. This means that not only does it not cost anything to download, but you also have complete access to the source code and you can even modify the program for your own ends if you wish.
The program is also cross-platform which means it works on a variety of different operating systems. The acronym in XAMPP stands for Cross platform for the “x,” then Apache, MySQL, PHP, and Perl. In order to run the program you need a ZIP or EXE file.
The program installs the Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl solutions all at once. The program is known as a solution stack package, which means that it has a bunch of different software items in it that lets you accomplish stuff all at once.
The Apache part of XAMPP is a web server program. It helps coordinate requests from other computer. The MySQL part is a type of database. The PHP and Perl parts are languages you can use to develop web solutions.
So basically, all of these tools together makes it so that you can run a webserver that can run sites through Perl and PHP as well as the basic HTML.
The point of XAMPP is to develop web applications on a local compute instead of having to go onto the Internet. You can test out aspects of web pages and applications before you have to upload them and make them available to people on the Internet.
The package makes it easier to install all the different parts of the server that you’ll need all at the same time. You could technically install all of these programs separately, but installing them all at the same time with the XAMPP package will make your life easier since you won’t have to hunt around for them.
